Attorneys - Welcome. Similar to most justice systems in other countries, Canada’s justice system is one which is comprised of institutions, courts, independent bodies, and associations that coordinate with one another to uphold the law and ensure peace and fairness. Being a country which has a legal system of bi-jural nature, Canada’s justice system stands as one that is distinct among democratic societies in the west. The two systems of law in Canada are the French-influenced civil law, based on a written civil code, and the traditional law or common law from the English. So then, let us delve deeper into the structure of Canada's justice system. Firstly, the Department of Justice deals with the legal interactions and affairs of Canada. It also gives legal assistance to agencies and individual departments. Federal domain disputes are addressed and settled by the Federal Court, while legal issues in the military, like for instance the trial of a military personnel, are managed by the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada. Meanwhile, The Tax Court of Canada, from the name itself, deals with appeals from companies regarding matters like income tax and insurance for employment. Furthermore, each province in Canada also has its own courts to deal with smaller cases. Lastly, the highest general court of appeal is the Supreme Court of Canada. both the civil law and the common law are regarded in this institution. In addition to this, law societies, such as the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) play a key role in Canada’s justice system. CBA serves as a congregation of the country’s judges, lawyers, law students, and law teachers. Our website is
